Rebuilding Community Through Co-Housing in Bradford, Manchester

Situated in the heart of Bradford, Manchester, this co-housing project seeks to restore a strong sense of community in an area where social connections have weakened. Designed to encourage interaction and shared experiences, the development incorporates communal spaces, collective activities, and family-friendly environments to support modern working families. By fostering a way of living based on collaboration and mutual support, the project reimagines urban housing as a place where people not only live but truly belong.

Massing Stages Development

The project design progressed through four stages, beginning with two L-shaped residential buildings and smaller public activity structures, strategically positioned for wind protection and sunlight exposure. Roof gardens and communal ground-floor spaces, including a gym, café, and children’s area, were added to support working families, while greenhouses promoted biodiversity. Circulation was improved with a bridge-like system, staircases, elevators, and a glass roof for natural light. Finally, cut-outs were introduced to enhance light penetration, creating a sustainable and inviting living environment.
